Artificial intelligence: jobs at risk or not?
Does artificial intelligence really put our professions at risk? Or is it a tool capable of accelerating productivity?
The doctor told me: “Excessive consumption of AI can have very serious consequences, increasing the risk of: unemployment, socioeconomic inequality, loss of privacy, increase in fake news, loss of control over data, and impact on cognitive and social skills.”
That being said, I decided to spend the last few weeks working with the help of some artificial intelligence tools and, although they have helped me speed up my productivity, I still do not believe they can replace everyone.
All the AIs that we have known and analyzed at Glacom are designed to increase, or rather, accelerate productivity. It seems that the AIs we see today already project us into a future where robotized androids operate and walk in the world alongside humans, who have already transformed into fyborgs and cyborgs and where ubicomp (that is, ubiquitous computing) reigns. And the processing of information? It has been entirely integrated into everyday objects and activities.
None of this is the case. As security expert Bruce Schneier states in Hacking AI, it is different to talk about specialized AI and general AI. The latter is what we see in movies and is capable of perceiving, thinking, and acting in a general and human way. If it were more intelligent than humans, it would be called “artificial superintelligence” which, combined with robotics, would give life to androids that, as in the movies, would destroy the human race in an apocalyptic world war. Lovers of “I, Robot”, we are not there yet, you must be patient!
ChatGPT along with others from OpenAI, Bing's Sydney, and Google's Bard are specialized AIs that are expanding text generation capabilities but are still very far from the destruction of the human race. They are platforms that give life to wonderful applications: try searching in google site:*.ai … including a news presenter in Kuwait: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-65238950
Wired also wonders if the famous ChatGPT is actually intelligent or if it is just a mirage: link to the article here. In reality, with millions of companies using OpenAI libraries, it seems more like an operation of behavioral surplus extraction.
According to Mr. Bruce, AIs seem to be a hacking action against people. Literally, these intelligent software programs have hacked our trust. The real problem is that these tools belong to a handful of people and, as Shoshana Zuboff states (The Age of Surveillance Capitalism), to exist they need behavioral surplus, namely our real-time experiences.
When to opt for Software and when for artificial intelligence? There is essentially one difference: a software calculates the fastest route for you, while an AI calculates the best path based on choices and preferences, but above all, personal and collective experiences.
I do not think, therefore, that we will experience the end of jobs, however, in a Western world based on innovation, those who do not embrace these systems will exit the market. Those who use AIs will be able to accelerate, doing the same work in less time and even improving it. Those who do not use them will become obsolete and expensive.
But let's look at some practical applications.
In the field of communication:
A. generating catalog images starting from an image https://labs.openai.com/ chatGPT images;
B. text generation https://chat.openai.com/auth/login (currently disabled in Italy but active via VPN from other countries);
C. correction and translations DeepL AI.
- Google Dialogflow for online assistance via text and audio chat
- Maps and navigation
- Facial Detection and Recognition
- Search and Recommendation Algorithms
- Digital Assistants (Virtual travel booking agent)
